We completely missed this a week ago, but the source image of the Vitter/Angle “Illegal Aliens” ad has been identified.

The photographer is Chris Floyd. He took the photo in Altar, Mexico. In 2006.

The men I met that morning in the Altar town square told me that they were farmers from the far south of Mexico and that that season’s crop had failed, leaving them with nothing to sell and no option, they felt, but to make the journey north to America to seek work. At the point that photograph was taken not one of them had ever set foot in America, and I have no idea if they ever did.

Floyd told the Washington Post he doesn’t know their names. Under the circumstances, they preferred to remain anonymous.

GOP New York candidate for Governor “Carl Has Two Families” Paladino’s family, er families, values rant on Sunday in front of a crowd of Hasidic Jews got more attention at the time for his anti-gay diatribe, but at the speech he also said:

“We must stop pandering to the pornographers and the perverts who seek to target our children and destroy their lives.”

Well you all know what comes next.  Assume the position for the hypocrisy drill, boys and girls. Assume the position.  In light of Carl’s fixation on pornography and teh gheyz, WNYMedia, the news outlet that in April released the obscene (horsefucking) and racist emails that Paladino had sent to half of Buffalo, has now released eight different completely NSFW pornographic videos and photos that he sent to practically every prominent businessman or politician in Western New York.  NSFW after the jump.

How to manufacture an NYT bestseller: “Asking that hosts buy books is also a standard feature of book tours. But Romney’s total [speech] price — $50,000 — was on the high end, and his publisher, according to the document from the book tour… asked institutions to pay at least $25,000, and up to the full $50,000 price, in bulk purchases of the book.” [Politico, via Political Wire]

Yesterday we posted a 1994 memo from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, explaining the options a President has when faced with enforcing a law he considers unconstitutional — or, as we’re addressing here, defending an unconstitutional law.

Like say, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Or the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Obama Administration’s defense of its defense is straightforward: Their hands are tied. As long as the law is on the books, they’re obligated to defend it, all the way to the Supreme Court. The President reiterated this defense Thursday on MTV:

Congress explicitly passed a law that took away the power of the executive branch to end this policy unilaterally, so this is not a situation in which with a stroke of a pen I can simply end the policy.

This is not quite the case.
