Your all-purpose metaphor.

WorldNetDaily must be reading our mind:

The second they heard about the Fort Hood massacre, millions of thinking Americans wondered in their gut: “Oh God, is this another crazy Muslim terrorist carrying out a one-man jihad, as has happened so many times before?”

Actually, our early wondering was whether the Adkisson Brigades had been activated for Guy Fawkes Day. Then, as “multiple shooters” were mentioned, we considered Seven Days in May. Our actual gut reaction when we heard the shooter’s name was “Oh fuck.” Followed minutes later by “envisioning tonight’s very ugly WND headline.”

As in: “Oh God, is this shooting going to result in another crazy anti-Muslim jihad, as has happened so many times before?”

The rush to exploit a tragedy for political point-scoring and book sales is something we’ve already noted, and will continue to note as particularly egregious examples come to our attention. (They’re all egregious on the face of it, but we must be selective.) But the question we posed Saturday morning — Did Hasan act alone? — remains top of mind.

So: What do we know Tuesday morning that we didn’t know three days ago?

Answer: Nothing conclusive.

There goes the infrastructure.

Back in January, when we first took note of the latest End of the World, we had no idea Hollywood was planning on buying the farm with a holiday blockbuster. Nor could we have imagined that NASA would provide The Greatest Trailer of All Time with a huge promotional boost:

The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, the US space agency insisted Monday in a rare campaign to dispel widespread rumors fueled by the Internet and a new Hollywood movie.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Picture, “2012,” arrives in theaters on Friday, with a 200-million-dollar production about the end of the world supposedly based on myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

All hate half-off!You’d think Apple introduced a new iPhone, the lines are so long to take advantage of a shooting:

The Liberty Counsel released a statement on Monday linking Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged shooter in last week’s Fort Hood massacre, to the gay-rights movement.

“In the wake of the horrific act of Islamic domestic terrorism at Fort Hood Texas, it has been learned that militant homosexual activists recently made similar online postings to those of Nidal Malik Hasan, threatening additional acts of terrorism against Christians,” stated an email from Matt Barber, Liberty Counsel’s director of cultural affairs, as well as an associate dean at Liberty University Law School.

Said militant homosexual activists are actually commenters at Joe.My.God. And while the referenced post has been deleted, Joe warns his readers not to “post anything, even in jest, that you wouldn’t mind saying in a signed letter to your local newspaper.”

Here, of course, all Swiftian vituperation is welcome. We’re not a target yet.

God hates haters.Like Randall Terry, the Westboro Baptist Clown Troupe is usually so predictable in their outrage, it’s not worth paying them notice. But today we’ll make an exception:

Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe-of-the-fringe anti-gay group famous for protesting at military funerals and claiming that God is punishing the country for its tolerance of homosexuality, was spotted this morning protesting outside Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama.

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue this morning.

“Anti-Obama” here applies to the entire family, as the Clown Troupe performance schedule makes clear:

Be gentle, Congress.

While we applaud the Democrats’ historic victory Saturday night, our parochial concern with the rush to healthcare “reform” hasn’t changed: How much will it screw us over?

Some background, if you’ve never had the pleasure of working freelance: Neither party has ever given a shit about Americans who embody the American Dream by working for themselves.

If you’re a wage slave, you’re familiar with the Social Security/Medicare tax from your paycheck, which amounts to 7.65 percent. But that’s only half of the real tax — your employer pays the other half.

Self-employed? You have the distinct pleasure of paying both halves, or 15.3 percent — off the top, whether you earn $5,000 or $50,000. You can deduct half from your gross income, but you’re still on the hook for the percentage — which is the most fabulously regressive tax America offers, since it only applies up to $106,800 of income. If you’re wealthy, you end up paying less a portion of your income than the working poor. Even sales tax is more fair than that.

But we like using the coffeehouse as our office, so we can live with that. Beats waking up at the asscrack of dawn five days a week.

Also, Harley riders. We don’t know who Larry Johnson is, but apparently he’s about to break the all-time rushing record for the Kansas City Chiefs. That is, if he doesn’t shoot off his mouth first:

We told you about Johnson’s comments Sunday night, when he took shots at his coach Todd Haley. Johnson compared his father’s football career playing for a legendary youth coach and then briefly playing in the NFL to Haley, who played golf and then “nuthn.”

Not content to rest after that, Johnson then responded to a Twitter follower that reminded Johnson of the incident last year in which Johnson allegedly spit a drink into a woman’s face. L.J. used a three-letter homophobic epithet to get his point across in response.

According to Yahoo! (and some of our commenters), Johnson wrote, “think bout a clever diss then that wit ur [expletive] pic. Christopher street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u.”

The slam added ammunition to a 31,000-signature fan petition demanding that the apparently unpopular Johnson be benched before he breaks the team record. Johnson quickly took his Twitter feed private, but not before getting in a final dig at critics: “Still richer than u.”

Which reminds of a line we’d like to say our father taught us, except for the fact we just made it up: All the money in the world, and he still can’t buy a clue.

Sometimes a snake is just a snake.Title: “The Book of Genesis Illustrated”

Author: R. Crumb

Rank: 22

Blurb: “Originally thinking that he would do a take off of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated by the Bible’s language, ‘a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions,’ that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation using the text word for word.”

Review: “So what is it, in the end? A guilt-ridden Catholic boy trying to atone for the excesses that made him famous in the first place?”
