Jane Hamsher annoys me sometimes, but she makes sense in today’s post about replacing my junior senator:

Everyone seems to be salivating because Caroline Kennedy called David Patterson [sic] and is apparently interested in the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton.

It’s a truly terrible idea.

Her leadership could have been really helpful when the rest of us were trying to keep the progressive lights on and getting the stuffing beaten out of us by a very well-financed right wing for the past eight years.  But when things were tough, she was nowhere to be found.

But what really resonates with me is this:

Title: Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America

Author: Chuck Norris

Rank: 1,447

Blurb: “Martial arts master, actor, and political activist — there is no job Chuck Norris can’t do.”

Review: “Great book by a great Patriot. I bought it for my grandson who is in first year high school. I know he won’t learn anything true about America in the federally funded schools who get their orders from the ungodly United Nations. America’s only hope is a divine intervention.”

Desperate, laid-off laborers took a last stand this week, occupying the factory building at Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago to demand severance and vacation pay they know would be denied without direct action.

The Association Press reported today: About 200 employees of Republic Windows and Doors began staging the sit-in in shifts this week after learning the plant was closing Friday.

With our economy in a shambles, you would think innovative home businesses would be encouraged. And by all accounts, the Dallas-area Cherry Pit has been a roaring success:

Police documents seized in a pair of July raids show that the weekend parties in the home were lucrative. Mr. Trulock and Ms. Norris had taken in at least $102,000 in donations from attendees during a 16-month period. The weekend parties drew hundreds of people, and parking overflowed into the street.

College kegger? Hardly. The Cherry Pit is a “swingers” club, a quaint throwback to the days when you could use that word without erupting in an orgasm of giggles. For fifty bucks you can cross the threshhold into a world of bad Seventies midnight movies, featuring a dance floor, profoundly well-stocked bar, and a six-way bed with what appear to be fresh sheets. Single gals welcome!

Die Welt! Sie ist meine, sie Hunde! Hahahahahaha! Bumsen sich!

Is there a day that passes when CheneyCo does not reset the evil meter?

There have been mercenaries in history who waged wars and profited from them. Some of them have been recorded as heroes, depending on whose side you or your ancestors were on.

But few can claim to have reconfigured a globe-dominating nation’s defense industry (by privatizing defense support), gone into industry to establish himself, and returned to government to incite a war so his former employers and he could clean up on it.  (Yes, we know that he makes noises about renouncing the profits from his shares; Goering said he loved kids, too.)

Yesterday I suggested that, should the South decide again to secede, we should let them go. Somewhere, some commenter wrote that we should retain this or that piece of Kentucky in our more perfect Union because it had bourbon or bluegrass or something.  And again I say, fuck no:

As an atheist and a Kentuckian, Edwin Hensley was rather put off to learn that the God he has spent decades not believing [in] had been put in charge of keeping the Bluegrass State safe from terrorism.

Turns out a stealthy legislative move by a Baptist preacher-turned-politician led to the passage of a 2006 bill requiring the state’s Office of Homeland Security to acknowledge formally that safety and security in the state “cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon almighty God.” The language in the bill only recently came to the public’s attention, leading Hensley and some like-minded Kentuckians to file a lawsuit against the state.

Quick, somebody call Chertoff and tell him Kentucky doesn’t need any more Homeland Security money.
