Fox’s Chris Wallace Conducts Sycophantic, Softball Interview With Rush Limbaugh [Think Progress]

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., was among those who urged Dierdre K. Scozzafava to endorse Democratic congressional candidate William L. Owens, the senator’s spokesman said Saturday.

The spokesman, Maxwell Young, said the senator called a number of north country political leaders after Ms. Scozzafava suspended her campaign and had more than one conversation with the Republican candidate ahead of her announcement. He said the senator also called other Democratic leaders about the situation, including White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Mr. Owens said he was “honored” by the endorsement.

090810_beck_palin_limbaugh_ap_comp_297I don’t often read op-eds I agree with because, well, I probably won’t learn anything.  Besides, reading the mainstream wingnuttery at the WaPo and NYT is fun and offers myriad opportunities to mock The Villagers.  But today’s Frank Rich piece about the NY-23 congressional kerfuffle is too good to pass up:

Who exactly is the third-party maverick arousing such ardor? Hoffman doesn’t even live in the district. When he appeared before the editorial board of The Watertown Daily Times 10 days ago, he “showed no grasp” of local issues, as the subsequent editorial put it. Hoffman complained that he should have received the questions in advance — blissfully unaware that they had been asked by the paper in an editorial on the morning of his visit.

Last week it turned out that Hoffman’s prime attribute to the radical right — as a take-no-prisoners fiscal conservative — was bogus. In fact he’s on the finance committee of a hospital that happily helped itself to a $479,000 federal earmark. Then again, without the federal government largess that the tea party crowd so deplores, New York’s 23rd would be a Siberia of joblessness. The biggest local employer is the pork-dependent military base, Fort Drum.

“I think it’s a fun idea. I think that Brett would probably actually be proud that we chose to have this kind of fun without going in to a negative, of a way,” Andre Jacque in the mayor’s office said.

That’s all well and good, but how many computers in the Green Bay mayor’s office have visited Burn Brett Favre?

In New York’s 23rd Congressional District, Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava has withdrawn from the race, leaving only the conservative, Doug Hoffman, versus the Democrat, Bill Owens.

The Republican Establishment in Washington, D.C. spent over $900,000.00 to elect Dede Scozzafava, who today abandons the race.
