John McCain, Sunday:

“We are concerned about, particularly, areas down on the border where there is substantial evidence that some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally.”

Reality, later Sunday:

A U.S. Forest Service official said today there is no evidence that illegal immigrants started some of the wildfires in Arizona, as Sen. John McCain had claimed.

John McCain was quickly shamed and vowed never to lie agai— oh, who are we kidding.

…so you don’t have to.

Here’s a taste of what Hitch has to say:

Propagandistic writing of this kind can be even more boring than it is irritating. For example, Mamet writes in “The Secret Knowledge” that “the Israelis would like to live in peace within their borders; the Arabs would like to kill them all.” Whatever one’s opinion of that conflict may be, this (twice-made) claim of his abolishes any need to analyze or even discuss it. It has a long way to go before it can even be called simplistic.

…and also:

[Mamet] shows himself tone-deaf to irony and unable to render a fair picture of what his opponents (and, sometimes, his preferred authorities, like Hayek) really believe. Quoting Deepak Chopra, of all people, as saying, “Our thinking and our behavior are always in anticipation of a response. It [sic] is therefore fear-based,” he seizes the chance to ask, “Is it too much to suggest that this quote contains the most basic prescription of liberalism, ‘Stop Thinking’?” On that evidence, yes, it would be a bit much.

We are told that Jon Stewart appeared on Fox News Sunday. And then we are told this:

Host Chris Wallace pressed Stewart on why he didn’t consider The New York Times and The Washington Post biased for asking readers to help read Sarah Palin’s email trove.

“They never said ‘help us go through the 2,000 pages of the Obama health care bill,'” Wallace noted.

Perhaps because the Palin email trove was a mere 22,199 pages longer?

Bruce Springsteen’s statement on losing his musical partner of almost 40 years:

It is with overwhelming sadness that we inform our friends and fans that at 7:00 tonight, Saturday, June 18, our beloved friend and bandmate, Clarence Clemons passed away. The cause was complications from his stroke of last Sunday, June 12th.  Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner, and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band.

Rest in Peace, Big Man.

This car simply fascinates me. In California, it’ll cost about 25 grand after federal and state tax credits. About 8 hours to charge it at home, 30 minutes at the charging stations Nissan is installing in the four states it which it will initially be sold.  If Zipcar in NYC gets one, I’ll be first in line.

So it is official – Nissan makes the only two cars I would have if I needed a car.

Title: “Go the Fuck to Sleep”

Authors: Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortés

Rank: 1

Blurb: “Profane, affectionate, and radically honest, California Book Award-winning author Adam Mansbach’s verses perfectly capture the familiar — and unspoken — tribulations of putting your little angel down for the night.”

Review: “How sad that this is found to be entertaining to people. People wonder why there are foul-mouthed kids running around? Moral decay is right… I would never buy this or have it in my home. We actually find better ways to express ourselves other than using the F* word… it is actually ignorant to use that all the time.”
