Official cigarette of the Cold War.Our recent post extolling the nutritional value of leftover DIGIORNO RISING CRUST THREE MEAT PIZZA for breakfast was in no way related to a promotional consideration provided by Kraft Foods Global, Inc., to My Dad’s Great Productions, publisher of Stinque.

Furthermore, our passing comment that our exclusive consumption of DIGIORNO RISING CRUST THREE MEAT PIZZA was making it difficult for us to squeeze into our LEVI’S REGULAR FIT 505 JEANS was not intended to fulfill our contractual obligation to Levi Strauss & Co., from whom we expect shortly a delivery via UNITED PARCEL SERVICE of America, Inc. Our subsequent digression that CLOROX BLEACH undoes WHAT BROWN DOES FOR US was not a signal to JOCKEY UNDERWEAR that we’re desperate for a fresh supply of tighty whities.

...roasting chestnuts on an open riverThere was that SCOTUS opinion on the Voting Rights Act, with preclearance surviving, but only just.  Meanwhile, Hans von Spakovsky is as transparent as Saran Wrap.

Villaraigosa decides to not run for Governor of California — and it looks somewhat iffy on Jerry Brown joining in the fun, too.

Don Fehr to retire as chief of baseball players’ union.  One strike, one long-running doping scandal, and players with stratospheric salaries.  Job well done.  (Also: some guy you never heard of won the U.S. Open.)

In anniversary news: Black Eagle to invite leaders of the gheys to the White House, for Stonewall commemoration.

And it’s also been forty years since the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland got all pissed off and burst into flames.  (Another clown over at The Corner, Iain Murray, said this: “The EPA is making a big deal out of the anniversary, for the simple reason that it is one of its founding myths.”  Silly environmentalists — thinking that water burning would be a cause of mild concern.  Where do they get off?)

alg_mark_sanfordMark Sanford (R-SC):

A guy from the northeast did a study on generational accounting. Generational accounting says what is the imputed tax for a young person born in America today? And remarkably, that number is 82,which at all ain’t that far from a thing called slavery.

Shorter Mark Sanford: When the South Carolina Supreme Court made me take the stimulus funds, I knew what it felt like to be torn from my family, sold into slavery, and beaten within an inch of my life.

Realizing, of course, that this comes from people who want English to be the official language:

On Saturday, Pat Buchanan hosted a conference to discuss how Republicans can regain a majority in America. During one discussion, panelists suggested supporting English-only initiatives as a prime way of attracting “working class white Democrats.” The discussion ridiculed Judge Sotomayor for the fact that she studied children’s classics to improve her grammar while attending college. The panelists also suggested that, without English as the official language, President Obama would force Americans to speak Spanish.

More GOP/Conservative FAIL after the jump.

Dial M for Moustache. We have rare occasion to read globetrotting poseur Thomas Friedman, and after his Sunday Times column, we’re discovering in ourselves an unwelcome inclination to scrape his chubby face across the nearest concrete edifice:

But now, having voted with their ballots, Iranians who want a change will have to vote again with their bodies. A regime like Iran’s can only be brought down or changed if enough Iranians vote as they did in 1979 — in the street. That is what the regime fears most, because then it either has to shoot its own people or cede power.

...forgetting about iraq for a secondOver in Iraq, another 70 people died in a single suicide bombing.  Iraq Body Count has it, unofficially, at 121 for the week.  (Full incident listing — updated only through June 1, for some reason — is found here.  By comparison, the May 2009 total — unofficial, per Iraq Body Count — is 344.  By further comparison, for years 2003-2007 inclusive, Canada averaged about 607 homicides per year.)

Do you remember when your momma said not to eat the cookie dough, before cookie dough became all hip and wonderful due to the interference of Ben and Jerry? Well, she was right!  Always listen to your momma.

Down in Miami, there’s a trend among condo owners — namely, not paying the assessment after getting foreclosed on.  Which is causing all sorts of problems, certainly.

And a couple of guys in New Orleans printed up a couple “Brad Pitt For Mayor” tee-shirts, and now all holy hell has broken loose.

Rocky Rococo at your cervix.Connoisseurs of the Firesign Theatre may recall (Dear Friends, Side 2, Cut 1, not that we’re keeping score) a throwaway line about “The Galloping Che” while they’re reading aloud mock television listings. Which itself was a reference to “The Galloping Gourmet,” a highly mockable cooking show of the day.

Just one of many throw pillows accenting our mental furniture over the years. Until today, when Che’s granddaughter decided to take them up on it.
