According to Howard Fineman, the end has come for Obama’s wonderful honeymoon with America , during which everybody complacently let him do what he wanted, as long as he kept stimulating our parts with his beautiful unicorn horn, which was oh so much softer than we expected – due to his gentle touch – but still firm and penetrating when we needed it to be.

Anyway, as Obama was going out of his way to meet with Congressional Republicans about the stimulus package and be a cool dude about all this, Fineman was (correctly) claiming that Obama’s bipartisan support is failing.

Inexplicably, John Choon Yoo is still a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley. He got his undergrad degree at Harvard and his JD at Yale.  After law school he clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals of the D.C. Circuit.  Later he went on to clerk for “Justice” Clarence Thomas. I am familiar with the work of both judges – rest assured that they are both right wing nutjobs who, in a just world, would be restocking vending machines or collecting bull semen.

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community’s top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call — including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG — were urged to persuade their clients to send “large contributions” to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

It was 1993, as we recall. Bill Clinton had just been inaugurated, and one of his first moves was to end the ban on Sodomite-Americans in the military. A bold move, quickly attacked — and quickly compromised.

What we remember about it is a quote from an opponent after the dust settled: “He can be rolled.”

In other words: Bubba had the power, but he hadn’t yet learned how to wield it.

Barack Obama has far more power than a plurality president facing a growing Republican opposition. But as we watch the evolution of what will necessarily be the nine-digit hallmark of his first term, we can’t help wondering whether he really understands the meaning of “I won.”
