Anakin: I’m tired of writing essays.

Padmé: But you’re still going to write them, right?

Anakin: (blank stare)

Padmé: But you’re still going to write them, right?

Anakin: I mean, yeah, probably, but we’ve been dragging ourselves through a desert of broken glass for years now. You look for signs of anything getting better, but all you see is everything getting worse.

Padmé: That doesn’t mean you should look away, right?

Anakin: (blank stare)

Padmé: That doesn’t mean you should look away, right?

Anakin: You can’t look away. But it’s the same shit, over and over. Racism, injustice, the environment, the plague — all these things we could do something about, but collectively we’re incapable of it.

Padmé: (blank stare)

Anakin: Uh-oh.

Padmé: (blank stare)

Anakin: Fuck.

Padmé: Maybe you should just bend the universe to your will and fix everything yourself.

Anakin: Yeah, let’s do that.

Yellin’ into the wind is somewhat cathartic if nothing else; at least that’s one freedom that we still have.

A side effect of the breakdown and atomization of society is that it’s almost impossible to know what to do about any of it; the worst part is the feeling of helplessness in the absence of collective action. And then there’s the psychological warfare and gaslighting carried out by the corporate media, the mouthpiece of the kleptocracy, that’s rushed in to fill the void.

It’s incredible that in a nation of ~330 million people, the current opposition is the best that we can do. Even “winning” feels as demoralizing as losing now, thanks to greedy, corrupt, and incompetent democratic saboteurs. I donate munnie and vote. I’ve tried volunteering opportunities forever, but nothing fits. Srsly, what else is there?

@¡Andrew!: We’re on our own, is what it comes down to, just like it was clear we were on our own a month into covid. We can’t give up The Fight, but we can’t expect The Fight to make things better — just to keep things from getting a shitload worse.

People — white people — are going to lie themselves into the grave, and take us with them. That’s collective action too, alas.

Wississippi white trash strike again.
