Defiant DOMA Lawyer Compares GOP Clients to Murderers, Rapists, Terrorists, Mob Bosses, and Rod Blagojevich
“I resign out of the firmly held belief that a representation should not be abandoned because the client’s legal position is extremely unpopular in certain quarters. Defending unpopular clients is what lawyers do.”
Former Bush Solicitor General Paul Clement, in his resignation letter to King & Spalding chairman Robert Hays. King & Spalding withdrew this morning from defending DOMA on behalf of House Republicans. Clement will continue representing the case, according to House Speaker John Boehner’s office.
Conservative Lawyer Resigns After Law Firm Drops DOMA Defense [TPM]
Certain quarters: aka, San Francisco.
I guess we know the answer as to what led to his “resignation.” He got booted out.
@Benedick is not as stupid as he looks.: Or Chelsea.
Hey, the more they want to quit their jobs and only deal with their little clique of like minded bigots the better it is. I support it wholeheartedly. I look forward to the day when Wingnuts of all stripes remove themselves from civil society and deal only with the idiots they approve. Call it a “soft secession”.
Add: Although, as I think about it, this may just be a clever way for the firm to have its cake and eat it too.
@Tommmcatt Be Fat, And That Be That: Isn’t that called “going Galt”?
Before we get all jolly and self-righteous mocking Clement, let’s recall that many, if not most, criminal defendants are guilty guilty guilty. 99 pct of those convicted of murder belong in jail. Do these people not deserve a defense, although the mob may howl for their heads? Don’t tell me that the DOMA-lovers choose to be bad. Criminals choose to be bad too.
@Dodgerblue: The thing that amuses me is that of all the principles he could have cited in making his decision, he chose that one. But yes, of course, even House Republicans, no matter how heinous their crimes, are entitled to a robust defense.
@Dodgerblue: This would be the same Paul Clement who was part of the Bush Administration when DOJ tried to mount a campaign against the firms providing pro bono representation to Gitmo detainees by pressuring the firms’ corporate clients to threaten to yank their business. So yeah, what nojo said — quite ironic he’d climb on that high horse as justification.
@nojo: I’m going to be chuckling all night at “But yes, of course, even House Republicans, no matter how heinous their crimes, are entitled to a robust defense.”
