Party Like It’s 1965

“The number of people living in poverty has climbed to 14.3 percent of Americans, with the ranks of working-age poor reaching the highest level since at least 1965. The Census Bureau says that about 43.6 million people, or 1 in 7, were in poverty last year. That’s up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.” [AP/Raw Story]

Even worse, one in five children under 18 live in poverty. But let’s cut unemployment extensions and meals at school and unnecessary social programs like that. Just don’t touch the tax breaks for millionaires or the SocSec/Medicare payments to Teabaggers.

Christine O’Donnell has openly gay sister. You heard it here first.

Hey, leave the Mad Men references for Mondays.

Way to go, Libertarian based policies, Raygunism and Clinton Walmartization. It’s been a rousing success.

@ManchuCandidate: I think they’re still in 1964.

And, as noted elsewhere, Mr. Hamm had a conversation with Mr. Stewart last night. He joked that the series would end with Don Draper signing on to Ronnie’s Morning in America campaign.

@Mistress Cynica:
I’ve always said, there are so many more of the non-poor than the poor, so if we all just helped one family….

Jesus made them poor so we could better understand our blessings. To give them more interferes with divine providence. Who are we to defy God?

@Benedick Arnuldsson:

Jesus wanted everybody to be poor. In fact is one of two essentials that he brings up to enter heaven, the other being acceptance and love of your neighbor.

@nojo: 1965. They skipped a year or so between seasons.

Quick, somebody ask O’Donnell if it still counts as masturbation if you just spontaneously jizz in your pants. The AEI and friends need to know if they’ve sinned after reading this…

And in Texas:
Governor Rick Perry is planning an all male, all the wild sausage you can eat $15,000 fundraising party.

@Tommmcatt Cannot Be Arsed To Think About Sharon Angle: Jesus said, give up all your crap and your families then you can follow me.

Jesus is anti-family!

Didn’t Tommy the Pinball Wizard also say something like that? BTW: random striking of barre chords on weirdly tuned guitar is producing something approaching “Sparks” (at 2:15) from “Tommy.” That and I’m getting the (not very hard) riff at 1:37 from “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica down.

Also: Dig Kirk’s “Mummy” guitar.

However, allowing the top marginal tax rate on income over $373,650 to increase from 35% to a whopping 39% would be worse than Nazism–IT’S SLAVERY.

And the Teatards claim they have the answer. Is there another nation in this wacky wide-world of ours whose formerly working class poors shriek and scream for more of the very same policies that have impoverished them and ruined their lives?

@redmanlaw:

(46) While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him….(48) But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” (49) And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! (50) For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
– Matthew 12:46-50

@Tommmcatt Cannot Be Arsed To Think About Sharon Angle:

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters – yes, even his own life – he cannot be my disciple.”

Luke 14:26. Unsettling when read literally. Requires a lot of spin and massaging when it pops up for the Gospel reading.

“21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.”

Matthew 19, 21-22

Then again, Jesus told his guys to pack a blade (as used in the Garden against the wrong guy), so that’s cool.

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:34-39

It’s not that hard a spin, actually. Ancient Semitic languages didn’t have a word for “like”…languages of that region tend to have less ways to express degree even today (hence “Death to America”, which I think we’ve discussed here before)-so there were two degrees of feeling “Love” and “Hate”. It is more of a context/translation issue than anything else.

@redmanlaw: and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household

It’s so prophetic!

@flippin eck, tommy can you hear me: Or, as former NFL great Gayle Sayers put it, “”God is 1st, Others are second, I am Third.”

I’ve come across those quotes before but good to have them all in one place. I might have them inscribed on the longboat.

@Tommmcatt Cannot Be Arsed To Think About Sharon Angle: Mrs RML speaks on why she is still a Catholic in light of challenges to her faith (with her marriage to a heathen being the least of them), tonight in a hall at the Santa Fe Cathedral complex. Cocktails to follow.

@redmanlaw: I’d join if they’d bring back the inquisition or the crusades. People just can’t have that kind of fun these days.

@FlyingChainSaw: I’d hate to have to throw baked and DB into a flaming pit, though. I like those guys.

@redmanlaw: We could whip up an indulgence or something.

@FlyingChainSaw: Don’t tell Christine. She’d rat them out.

@redmanlaw: She’s such a goodytwoshoes that one, she really gives jesufascism a bad name.

@redmanlaw:

Wow, does she have a soft copy of her speech? I’d love to see it…

That’s one area I’ve definitely never understood about our HARDline Cathoholics and Talibangelical AmeriKKKan Xtians. The New Testament is unequivocal that you have to give up all of your worldly possessions, preferably to the poors. Howzit that so many of these nuts are multi-millionaire$?

@Tommmcatt Cannot Be Arsed To Think About Sharon Angle: She’ll be flattered to hear you’re interested. I’ll check. She may toss the prepared remarks and wing it after sizing up the crowd. The opening will be by the Very Rev. Msgr. Jerome Alire, who loves his pink Chuck Taylor high tops and his Chihuahuas. No women read or otherwise participate in the services at the Cathedral, we’re told. (We go to another parish, the groovy liberal one with Spanish hymns performed by the Martini Lounge of Christ Orchestra.) The word is that the Archbishop won’t allow it. Mrs RML may address how the Church will be led by men until after her lifetime. See the capsule summary tonight for the late evening cocktail hour.

@¡Andrew!: They’ve worked it out that God wants them to be rich. That their riches are a sign of God’s abundance. (Prosperity theology) That the free market is an expression of divine providence and to try to regulate it is to flout God’s laws. But you knew all that and are just toying with me. Just making me dance attendance on your every whim while you pretend to be so interested in that damn book. I know you’re not reading it. I know you’re just trying to provoke me. Well it’s not going to work. Not this time. You hear? Not. This. Time!

@redmanlaw: Sounds like a good evening. My best thoughts are with you both. Is now a good time to bring up Pope Joan?

@Benedick Arnuldsson:

There is never a bad time to bring up Pope Joan.

Testiculos Habit et Bene Pendentes

@Benedick Arnuldsson: As Steph Miller’s stand-in host John Fugelsang puts it: “Jesus is kind of like Elvis – I’m a big fan of his early work, but his fan club scares the shit out of me…”
