Hee. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Who knew the Gilded Age XXXIII would end?

Reading the article someone else provided about the U.S. becoming a third-world country on LAT, the comments from the right are beyond stupid, accusing the columnist of “not cheering on her own team” and writing typical “lib dribble [sic]”.

@rptrcub:
Got into a brawl with the flag wavers on io9 (SF blog) because they were upset that someone wrote a post about a TV series focusing on Little Americas forming in other nations as US Americans flee US America.

I had the temerity to mention that US Exceptionalism was a myth and that it was following the course of other great powers and empires.

One guy tried to tell me that a service based economy made the US different (no different than the Dutch speculating on tulip bulbs, the English pursuit of leisure and the focus on finance instead of manufacturing) and another was confident that the US could feed itself despite fearing economic collapse (I pointed out that oil and equipment used to make the food was imported.)

I doubt that the flag wavers will ever get it. If they do, it will be too late for them.

The grammar mistake on the artistic rendering is making my inner copy editor’s head hurt. But subtly apropos given we’re talking about morans.

@ManchuCandidate: Dude, when was that? I’da jumped in had I been there. Mrs RML has been saying since 2000 that those were “the good old days” and that we’ve been living in a decadent new Gilded Age for a while now. Our Queen Rachel asked Laura Tyson yesterday why we should help those Wall Street assholes out when they’ve been getting the Rolling Stones to play their birthday parties.

We have a friend was was fairly well off and sheltered while growing up and can’t get why the credit crunch hurts her chances of selling her house even in a pretty desirable community. Her only hope right now is for another trust funder/trustafarian to find it and pay cash so she can move.

@redmanlaw:
It was mid afternoon yesterday. Normally I would have hung in longer, but it was like talking to Sarah, uh, a store dummy. They think that the sun won’t set on US America. Like many Brits during the 50s and 60s who clung to the hope of a Brit resurgence that never came.

As for your friend, I had to explain this mess to some of my more ignorant friends because they assumed that Canada City would avoid this. Most of them got it. I’m glad that none of my RWer friends were there because I think I would have smashed a beer bottle on their heads.

@ManchuCandidate: Every empire has its day in the sun, then eventually becomes a tourist destination.

Didn’t make it to io9 until about 11 canada city time. I was wrestling with a convoluted real estate matter while the lug nuts were shoving you around.

@SanFranLefty: Ditto. But as you pointed out, “Welcome to you are DOOM!” seems oddly appropriate.

@flippin eck: All ur doom are belong to us.

@ManchuCandidate: Would you please tell Dion (not Celine, the leader of the Liberal Party) to get his ass in gear? I don’t want to have to flee to a Harper regime in the event of a Hope FAIL.

flippin eck: Wall Street has no chance to survive make your time.

(Dammit: rptrcub beat me to the obvious Zero Wing reference. Well played.)

@rptrcub sez: Would you please tell Dion (not Celine, the leader of the Liberal Party) to get his ass in gear? I don’t want to have to flee to a Harper regime in the event of a Hope FAIL.

Seconded.

@chicago bureau:
@rptrcub:

I think many of us are already saying that but falling on deaf ears.

@SanFranLefty: Yeah, it’s intentional, a joke in the show, but it still hurts to look at.

JNOVJr and I are gleeing b/c of the Killface postcard! Will read and catch up with comments, now…
