Sally Kern Apologizes for Calling Blacks Lazy, But Gays Will Still Doom America

We don’t know how she did it, but Oklahoma ~~crazy lady~~ firebrand Sally Kern actually crossed a line:

“I want to humbly apologize for my statements last night about African-Americans and women,” Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said in a statement. “I believe that our government should not provide preference based on race or gender. I misspoke while trying to convey this point last night during debate.”

Heavens! Whatever could Sally Kern say that would make Sally Kern apologize?

After Rep. Richard Morrissette, D-Oklahoma City, argued against the measure partly because one in four black males are in prison or on some type of probation, Kern asked, “Is this just because they’re black that they’re in prison, or could it be because they didn’t want to work hard in school?

“I taught school for 20 years, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t want to work as hard,” she said, reading from notes. “They wanted it given to them.”

Ah, yes. She misspoke while reading from notes. Happens to us all the time.

But we understand why she might want to get that off the table, what with a new book coming out this summer. A book about her other bigoted remarks on gays being “death knell of this country”, and “the liberal attack” after she said them. Because while Sally Kern certainly welcomes stoning, it’s not like she wants everyone to gang up on her.

Don’t forget that she also said the reason women don’t make as much as men is because they don’t work as hard and want to spend more time at home. I can’t decide if it’s safer to have her in the legislature rather than in the school room. Who knows how many kids she damaged in her 20-year career?

@Mistress Cynica: I think, on the whole, I’d rather have them out in the open, where their bigotry is on the record. Of course, this presumes they can be sufficiently contained, where their legislative votes don’t matter.

Then again, kids are resilient. They know an asshole teacher when they see one.
