Go, Fightin’ Crackpots!

You remember Liberty University, don’t you? Falwell’s joint? Yeah, that one. So, how are they doing?

Liberty University students received approximately $445 million in federal financial aid money last fiscal year, according to U.S. Department of Education data, making LU the top recipient in Virginia.

The rapid growth of Liberty’s online program has fueled the increased reliance on federal aid dollars, said Robert Ritz, LU’s executive director of financial aid.

Last year, Liberty enrolled about 52,000 online students, plus another 12,000 through its residential programs.

By a nutty coincidence, that $445 million is $25 million more than public broadcasting gets! Small world!

But hey, it’s all for education, right? America’s future? Say, what do you learn there?

The Center for Creation Studies is an interdisciplinary education and research institute committed to the study of the origin of the universe, the earth, life and the species. This study draws upon knowledge from religion, science, philosophy and history…

History place cards show some background information on creationism, one example being the comparison of Neanderthals to modern humans.

We think a comparison of Liberty to a modern university would be more, um, enlightening.

Can somebody explain to me why it’s somehow evil to spend tax dollars on ladybits but spending money to prop up a treasonous hotbed of dominionism and general evangelical fucktardery is OK?

@al2o3cr: No sane person can explain it to you. But a veritable host of demented fundamentalists stand ready and eager to do so.

@al2o3cr: I would imagine that some of that “Federal Aid” comes in the form of student loans, but still your point is well taken. And it is probably a stretch to cast Fallwell (didn’t he die?) and Liberty University as a dominionist a la Rushdooney. I mean, I wouldn’t put it past them, but I’ve never heard them be outwardly treasonous like the shit you hear out of Coral Ridge Ministries, for example.

It is general evangelical fucktardery, though.

@Capt Howdy: Heh. Do you think they would be dumb enough to run Trump?

@Capt Howdy: They both have about as much chance of winning, that’s for sure…

@Capt Howdy: @Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One: Well, Trump’s not running, so the point is moot. Part of it, anyway.

What the poll really shows is how bad a candidate Mitt remains. Nobody trusts him.

tj/breaking President Obama has tapped Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) to replace Tim Kaine as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Mike Allen reports Wasserman Schultz “was chosen for her strength as a fund-raiser and as a television messenger, and for her clout in the crucial swing state of Florida.”

@nojo:
so
who do you think it will be? I think Barbour is as good a bet as any.

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One: Yes, all the money in the story is student financial aid. And Liberty is a for-profit university. Er, “university”. Alleged.

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One:

dont underestimate Barbour. he is smart and he speaks teabag while not really being one. he has been a reasonably successful governor and he is white.

@Capt Howdy: It is totally Mittens. Has to be. They simply couldn’t be dumb enough to run a southern racist against Barack Obama. I mean, they keep shocking me with how stupid they are, but that would take the cake.

@Capt Howdy: He’s a crypto-racist. He looks like Archie Bunker, for crissakes.

@Capt Howdy: Haley gets the Huckabee vote. And since he’s not manifestly batshit crazy, he might have a chance.

But I don’t have a read on it yet, at least until we have a clearer picture of the field. Besides Mitt & Timmy, who do we really know is running? Besides manifest cranks?

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One:

Archie Bunker perhaps, but put him in a white suit and matching hat and he could *totally* pass for Boss Hogg…

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One:

He’s a crypto-racist. He looks like Archie Bunker, for crissakes.

you make that sound like a disqualifies. I think in fact it might be his biggest asset.

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One:

I know they almost always do the next in line but I cant believe they will nominate Mittens. but then I did not think they would nominate McCain either.

@Capt Howdy: Agreed. Haley’s past is not a problem, and may even be a benefit. All he has to do is “deny” it or “apologize” for it, and dog whistles go off all over the South.

Mittens? Not a fucking chance. He’s not a real Christian, after all. Plus that whole Romneycare thing in Massachusetts. Plus nobody trusts him. Even wingnuts can see through the pandering.

Timmy? Nobody buys that American Hero shit. His pandering is worse than even Mittens. Veep, maybe.

Right now, I just don’t see anybody winning. Maybe it comes down to who loses least.

@nojo:

exactly
that is how he ran for governor. the whole white supremacist thing was totally vetted. no one cared. also he was head of the republican party, right?

@Capt Howdy: Yes, Haley can raise serious money. It would be a world-class joke if he won the nomination, but teabaggers aren’t known for rational thinking.

And didn’t the Dems recently nominate a candidate who stood no rational chance of winning? I still fondly remember a Wonkette commenter telling me to grow up and get real in January 2008.

@nojo: I think I’ve just predicted a hung GOP convention.

@nojo:

a hung GOP convention

we should stake out the local mens rooms with secret cameras.

@nojo:
I actually think of all the pea brains out there he might just give Barry a run for his billion dollars. I do not underestimate the man.

@nojo: It’s amusing to me that only inside the Beltway is Barbour a viable candidate. He’s a horrible speaker and a Boss Hogg caricature.

@blogenfreude:

but you are aware that roughly 50% of the country are also Boss Hogg caricatures. right?
and 99% of them think the earth is 6000 years old and that Obama is a muslim communist.

@blogenfreude: His accent isn’t going to play well outside of the deep Confederacy. Jon Stewart should pay him to run.

@Dodgerblue:
that is sort of the point. its the southern strategy all over again.

have you guys MET the republicans?

@blogenfreude: To the degree that the Beltway thinks Haley would make a compelling GOP nominee, yes, they’re fooling themselves. And God bless ’em for it.

But we’re talking about who might survive the GOP primaries, which is another game entirely. And it’s not at all out of the question that the teabaggers might be foolish enough to nominate him.

The underlying premise here is that the teabaggers control the nomination. That might change by next spring, but I’m not seeing any signs of it now.

@nojo:

yes
he (we certainly hope to god) would not win the election. the primary is another story.

@Capt Howdy: Allowing that, if the economy tanks, all bets are off. If Barry can’t say we’re better off in 2012 than we were four years ago, he’s very vulnerable.

@nojo: Which is why gas prices are such a huge deal for us on the left right now, frankly. And also why you have to admire the guy for shutting off (overt) support to the Libyan rebels when he did. He is a man of principle, when all is said and done, Guantanamo notwithstanding.

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One: He is a man of principle, when all is said and done, Guantanamo notwithstanding.

I’ll refer you to Mr. Greenwald for a catalog of other civil-liberties matters notwithstanding.

But that’s what happens when you elect a ConLaw preznit. Look what happened when we elected an MBA preznit.

@nojo: Not to mention a third-rate movie actor.

@Dodgerblue: And two-time governor of a major state. Everybody forgets that part.

@nojo: Governor of California is a largely ceremonial position.

@Tommmcatt is with Karin Marie on This One: No, that would be Lite Governor, where luckily Mayor McDreamy can wreck way less damage than he did as mayor of Ess Eff.

@SanFranLefty: Tommmie’s right, at least regarding the modern office. Back in the pre-prop Sixties, different game.
