Rolls Royce Engine Test

It’s been in the news lately … I just love big expensive mechanical things:

I saw a jet engine explosion about 100ft 200+ ft away when I was working on a new runway at the local International airport. An An-225 (largest plane in the world) that was carrying an ex CN diesel locomotive bound for Roosha was about to take off. The pilots spooled her up to 100% power and boom. A 40 ft jet of flame came out of the outboard port turbofan. I saw the flame and hit the dirt about 10 seconds later (wasn’t really thinking till it was way too late.)

Needless to say, the An-225 was there as a hanger queen for a long time.

@ManchuCandidate: YouTube also features dead birds fired into GE, PW, and RR engines to simulate bird strikes.

@blogenfreude: One of my buddies in legal aid did that as part of his engineering coursework.

@redmanlaw: Amazing that today, we have engines like this one, yet 100 years ago, we could barely stay in the air with canvas and wooden airplanes.
