Donald Trump, January 2000: “We must have universal healthcare. I’m a conservative on most issues but a liberal on this one. We should not hear so many stories of families ruined by healthcare expenses.” [Weigel, via Political Wire]

The family angle is disingenuous at best but it is shocking the kind of violence that health insurance premiums have inflicted on small and medium-sized businesses without an organized response from the business sector. Trump would have been more credible giving a business and growth case for some kind of publicly funded health care system. Getting set up and going in the states is hard enough without the workman’s comp and health insurance monster your back.
