BP Cleanup Worker Speaks
Who could have predicted that BP would abandon the people it hired to clean up its mess?
Oh, man. I was down in Weeks Bay, Alabama a week ago, eaing grits and drinking sweet tea, and talking to locals at a conference on the BP disaster. I met a shrimper (4th generation, she said) who surprised me by saying that the feds had reopened fishing too soon. Her take was that they did this so as to reduce BP’s payouts to the locals. Y’know, the feds took a security interest in BP’s future earnings in the US to secure BP’s obligation to pay into the $20BB fund that BP set up, giving the feds a financial interest in BP’s success. I’m not making this up. I know one of the lawyers who came up with that idea, and he’s proud of it.
