Beverages We’re Glad We Didn’t Know About Two Days Ago

“Mixing alcohol and caffeine is hardly a new concept, but a rash of cases involving students and others who landed at hospitals after drinking beverages that combine the two in a single large can has alarmed college and health officials around the country.” [NYT]

Shocking! It’s as if the college administrators just realized there were cheap, heavily sweetened and strong sorts of booze about…

I had a few sips of Sparks once. It was… yeah.

So it’s literally the poor man’s champagne-and-cocaine combo.

Ok, so I’m gonna bust if we don’t talk about last nites Rocky Horror Glee Show.

I was really impressed with how well the songs fit most of the characters, Emma’s “Toucha Toucha Touch Me” was my favorite number of the night, and could’ve very well been a stand-alone song for her character. Kurt made a fine Riff Raff, Brittney and Santana were adorable as Columbia and Magenta, respectively. My second favorite was Dentist Carl’s rockin’ cover of “Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul)” which featured poor Will as cuckholded as Frank-N-Furter in the film. Fortunately, it didn’t end with an insanely jealous pick-axing. And of course, Finn and Rachel were ideal as Brad and Janet, dammit.

What didn’t work: the somewhat contrived plotline, especially Sue’s, Mercedes as Frank-N-Furter, which simply didn’t make sense even though she nailed “Sweet Transvestite,” and I was a bit put off by the ending.

Overall, the ep was wildly uneven, but the musical numbers, sets, and costumes were flawless.

@¡Andrew!: Apparently Jayma Mays auditioned with that song and totally nailed it and the producers have been looking for an excuse to feature it ever since.

@mellbell: She did, and it was awesome. She also has the show’s best wardrobe. Come to think of it, I just noticed her fascinating resemblance to Susan Sarandon.

So the Alarmed People are apparently unaware that people have been enjoying coffee-based drinks since about forever. Some faves: coffee and whiskey, coffee and brandy. Then there’s hot toddies made with black tea and Wild Turkey, like the one I’ll be making in a bit for this cold or whatever.

@¡Andrew!: Sweet Transvestite missed the wailing sax in the chorus (and Tim Curry). I liked the Time Warp finale.
