We Could Have Had One

but Congress killed it. I love this sort of stuff: “GENEVA – The world’s largest atom smasher conducted its first experiments at conditions nearing those that existed just after the big bang, breaking its own record for high-energy collisions with proton beams crashing into each other Tuesday with three times more force than ever before.” [MSNBC]

Congress killed it because it was fucking expensive. Oregon wanted it, but Texas had more heavyweights pitching the project.

But nojo, what price knowledge? Surely we should be spending all we’ve got, including aborted fetuses and extra-stupid politicians, in the pursuit of knowledge.

@nojo: I would have built it with money saved from canceling most manned space flights except when necessary (like fixing the Hubble). Particle physics is important.

And Christ – the Raiders are looking to acquire Donovan McNabb from da Iggles … bad move if they trade him.

@blogenfreude: Well, fine, but at least with the collider in Geneva, it gives us a few minutes to beam up before the planet implodes from the black hole.

I love it too. did you see this

Large Hadron Collider ‘Being Sabotaged from the Future’

Scientists claim the giant atom-smashing Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being jinxed from the future to save the world.

In a bizarre sci-fi theory, Danish physicist Dr Holger Bech Nielsen and Dr Masao Ninomiya from Japan claim nature is trying to prevent the LHC from finding the elusive Higgs boson. Called the “God particle,” the theoretical boson could explain the origins of mass in the universe — if physicists can find the darn thing.

The scientists say their math proves nature will “ripple backward through time” to stop the LHC before it can create the God particle, like a time traveller who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.

I just love weddings dont you?

they always come off especially nice in a cinder block bunker

@nojo: So we’ll have a few seconds to savor our new knowledge of how the universe began before it takes its revenge … sounds fair.

@Capt Howdy: I’m thinking this work wasn’t peer-reviewed.

@Capt Howdy: Has that nice Eva and Adolf vibe . . .

BTW, mystery production now identified as “Thor” is shooting 2nd unit stuff in el Barrio RML. Some crew for True Grit or Thor was shooting some interiors in a building down the block from my office near the Santa Fe Plaza, the same one used for Georgia O’Keefe interiors.

@redmanlaw: the same one used for Georgia O’Keefe interiors.

I swear, I only ever saw flowers.

@ナビスコ: Gettin’ lonely out in the rock there, pal?

We have a nice O’Keefe museum here in town. It’s pretty cool to see all that famous stuff right there on the hoof. We go at least every six months or so when they hang a new show.

@redmanlaw: Gettin’ lonely out in the rock there, pal? I keep reminding myself that at least the daily commute doesn’t suck.

I swung through your hometown some years ago, and oddly enough did not catch the O’Keefe museum. Is it new-ish?
