Malaise-era GM Nova/Ventura (and later Buick Apollo) was actually pretty indestructable – based on a design going back to the early 60s. I think it only had about seventeen moving parts – hard to break it.
This story reminds me of the Simpsons ep where Mr Burns took the bus when he went broke.
