One of the last acts of Cheney/Bush was to open vast tracts of NY State including the Catskill Park where we live. They would have allowed drilling for gas to go on in the Catskill high peaks wilderness. It was all done very secretly. At first it looked as if it couldn’t be stopped but just about 3 months ago something happened which I don’t entirely understand but which it seems has stopped it from happening here at least. They were being required by the DEP to run a full environmental impact study for every bore they sank which ties everything up in years of process and huge amounts of money. Doubtless they’ll be back. Both the worry and the safeguard is that this region provides most of NYC’s drinking water and the city has no filtration plant. Of course, some bright spark will be tempted to grab a quick profit by selling off some of the city’s thousands of acres some of which are next door. But we stopped a casino and an appalling ‘resort’ golf club so maybe we’ll be lucky.
