Say It Ain’t So, Sheriff Joe

“The Justice Department finally filed suit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, accusing the Arizona official of engaging ‘in a pattern or practice of unlawful discriminatory police conduct directed at Latinos in Maricopa County.'” [TPM]

I’m kind of curious as to what shit comes out of this.

I have a feeling this is going to turn ugly and it will not end well for Joe.

@ManchuCandidate: If I were conspiracy-minded, I’d note that the charges were “finally” filed after Mitt won the nomination. Sheriff Joe is a Wingnut Hero, so Mitt now has to defend or condemn him.

@nojo: I’m sure our Arizona correspondent has a lot to say on the issue, but last month’s ABA magazine had a long and interesting article about how deep the shit runs in Maricopa County.

@SanFranLefty:
Yup. It’s even messier than the article about the other US America’s sheriff from OCSD now Fed prisoner.

@ManchuCandidate:
You mean Sheriff Joe could go to prison? I hear Protective Custody is lovely this time of year.

When he’s jailed I want him in pink underwear in a tent in the desert.

@SanFranLefty: Andrew Thomas got disbarred and isn’t appealing. His idiot minions are appealing, but aren’t likely to succeed with the Arizona Supreme Court. Joe testified at the bar hearing and couldn’t recall much of anything. The feds were watching and listening to the whole thing.

@ManchuCandidate: This is just a civil suit. The criminal investigation has been going on even longer than the civil rights investigation and nothing has come of it yet. Word leaked out about a federal grand jury a couple of years ago, but no indictment has been handed down.
