The New New World

Attack Mars!Title: “The Martian”

Author: Andy Weir

Rank: 1

Blurb: “After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive — and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.”

Review: “I don’t really read that much, but after reading The Martian I’m beginning to think that maybe I should pick up reading as a hobby.”

Customers Also Bought: “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”

Footnote: Yes, yes, explorers, adventure, the New Frontier. Speaking of which, the European (and European-descended) track record with various forms of colonization ain’t exactly encouraging.

That’s what made Alien so different.

New Frontier, but with chest bursters and acid blooded face huggers. Equal opportunity gory death.

OMFG!

CPAC 2016 will be March 2nd – 5th, 2016 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

You cannot make this shit up!!

@¡Andrew!:
CPAC is Mos Eisley, but with more freaks in costume.

@ManchuCandidate: The genius of Alien is that it was a horror movie with scifi trappings and a thorough infusion of Freudian symbolism.

That, and Sigourney Weaver in her underwear.

Highly recommended. My book club (which typically doesn’t go in for science fiction) really dug it. And the movie actually looks really promising.

@¡Andrew!: Even better: “Gaylord” is the name of the owner, the ultra-conservative publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review’s “Worst Newspaper in America,” the Daily Oklahoman.

@mellbell: My workmates — I have some now — and I are going to see it Wednesday. In 3D, which at least one trusted source strongly recommends.

Pointless movie, but the reclining theater chair was really comfy.

@SanFranLefty: It wasn’t a Drafthouse so we had to do our consumption beforehand, and our booker reserved 2D by mistake. But now having seen it, I’m not sure what 3D would have added to the experience.

Not a bad movie, no false moves, couple of clever jokes, fun Donald Glover cameo. But it just feels like an extended meditation on the middle part of Apollo 13.
