@The Nabisco Quiver: I realize that my catastrophizing everything is not a healthy defense mechanism, but rather, a symptom of the fact that I cannot tolerate uncertainty and prefer the releif of knowing the ending, to the uncertainty of waiting for the plot to unwind. Not a very good defense mechanism when you do it with, oh, relationships, jobs, things like that. But lately I have learned to stop worrying and love the bomb, as it were. Another positive effect of my recent venture, I think. No more fear, its really strange, not to be afraid. These crazies? Just imagine what would happen if the GOP got the majority back in the house, you wanna see a high-tech lynching, and Clarence would be the one to light the pyre.

@SanFranLefty: My shrink analyzed me as a person who catastrophizes everything. I call it “prepare for the worst, hope for the best” as my survival method, but shrinks think it’s a bad thing to do. Your shrink would hate me, because I do it as well. The ultimate defense mechanism. @al2o3cr: If someone sat O'Really down and explained to him the cost/benefits of switching - that is, the amount of tail he would get as a reformed liberal vs. what he has to proposition now - he'd do it in a heart beat. I think we need to put Chainsaw on this.

Glenn Beck as Howard Beale? Well, he’s got the yelling part down. But the essence of the Beale character was that he completely lost it and started to speak the truth to power. That would be a truly spectacular meltdown if ol’ Glenn just suddenly reconnected to reality…

There’s an outside chance it could be O’Reilly – I sat down once and actually read some of his pre-Faux News stuff; he was (obviously) very conservative, but in the old-school fiscal responsibility sense rather than the insane neoconservative caricature he’s become. I could see some event occurring that snaps him out of the Fox “image”.

This is exactly the kind of propaganda that makes our nation PROUD.

It was a tragedy, terrible loss of life, I’m sorry for them and their families.

But it’s “all part of the process”.

“We don’t keep secrets and cover things up.”.

We DO, and we STILL DO, and it’s a fucking tragedy.

@SanFranLefty: I fully believe that there are innumerable plots right now to do that very thing. Like with JFK, of course. And it would be very sad, and I would definitely cry.

Of course, most likely, JFK was killed because of some policy position that threatened the nascent US oligarchy. But we’ll never know.

I’m glad we finally have a black President, but I’d also like a female President, a gay President, or even a straight white male President who actually stood up to the oligarchy.

While I’m at it, a Congress composed of men and women who just happened to get into politics because they wanted to help people.

This whole crazee business seriously reminds me of the “terrorists as entertainment” subplot of the first half of the movie. But who’s going to be our Howard Beale?

My other thought: this explains why Bush didn’t stop reading to the schoolkids on 9/11 – he wasn’t really reading “The Pet Goat”, he was training his own little group of Hitler Youth! Obviously, that would be more important than terrorists hijacking planes.

Makes perfect sense now! :)
